Located in the complex tugumuda, former berbaya magnificent art deco building, which is used as the headquarters of the Dutchrailways (tram), or better known as the Nederlandsch IndischeSpoorweg Maschaappij (NIS). The building work of Dutch architectProf. Jacob F. Klinkhamer and BJ Queendag according to historical records was built in 1903, was inaugurated on 1 July1907.Masyarakat Semarang more familiar with this building as theHouse Lawang Sewu, considering that this building has a number of doors in large quantities, which figuratively means numbersmany thousand or more, in the Java language Lawang sewu, Lawang means door and Sewu means a thousand.

In its development after independence is used as the office of the Railway Department of Indonesia (DKARI) or PT . Kereta Api Indonesia right now. Then for military purposes, namely as officeKODAM IV Diponegoro (which is now centered in Watu Gong),and was last used as the Department of Transportation Regional Office in Central Java. Currently the building is entered in 102ancient or historic buildings in the city of Semarang is used as a tourist attraction with a facility such as historical heritage of ancient buildings and antique architects, there are dungeons and towers of information, often used as an exhibition place in certain events.
